Celebrating our achievements and looking ahead in 2024! Dear colleagues, As we are approaching the end of this year, we would like to express our gratitude and appreciation to all of you, specially IRAHP financial members, who have contributed to the success of IRAHP in 2023. We are proud of what we have accomplished together as a team, and we are excited about what lies ahead in 2024. Here are some highlights of our achievements and plans: 1️⃣We expanded our directory featuring more than 2000 Iranian-Australian Health professionals working in Australia. 2️⃣We had a wonderful Norooz celebration last March, thanks to our colleagues who surprised us with their beautiful music performance. 3️⃣We published the IRAHP Newsletter last June, and we are working on the next issue. It was a great opportunity to learn from experts and network with peers. 5️⃣ We facilitated several IRAHP-HOPE Health sessions and SBS Health Podcasts called "voice of health" in the last three months aiming to improve health literacy of the Farsi Speaking community living in Australia. We are shaken by the news of death of Dr. Aida Rostami in recent days. Dr. Rostami was treating injured protesters in Tehran until she disappeared earlier this week. Her tortured body was handed over by the regime authorities to her family a day later, with the authorities claiming her death was caused by an accident, while the forensic report highlighted the cause of death as being hit in the head by a hard object. Our other colleague, Dr. Hamid Ghare Hasanloo, is currently in prison and potentially facing the death penalty. Dr Ghare Hasanloo and his wife, Farzaneh Ghare Hasanloo, were arrested in Karaj, Iran, five weeks ago by Islamic Republic guards. Their crime was attending the funeral of Hadis Najafi, a young girl who was killed in a peaceful protest in Karaj a few days earlier. They have been tortured and beaten in order to obtain false confessions for crimes they have not committed. Earlier in October 2022, Dr. Parisa Bahmani, a female general surgeon, was shot in the head during peaceful protests of physicians in front of the Iranian Medical Council. To receive her body for a private funeral, her family was forced to say she died in an accident, as in many other cases. During the same protest, Ms. Niloufar Aghaei, a midwife, was shot in the eye by security forces. Many of our colleagues have been arrested for helping wounded protesters or speaking up against the brutal actions of the I.R. regime. These include, but are not limited to: - Dr. Dariush Farhoud -Dr. Alireza Sedaghat, the head of the local Medical Council, along with his wife, Dr. Bita Mirzaei -Dr. Reyhaneh Mokhtarian, general practitioner -Dr. Ramin Neshasteh, general practitioner -Dr Iman Navvabi, 4th year surgical registrar -Dr Mohammad Ahmadvand, As members of the Iranian Australian Association of Health Professionals (IRAHP), we stand in solidarity with our Iranian colleagues and call for international medical organisations, who have a responsibility towards ensuring human rights, to stand in unity with our fellow Iranian healthcare workers who are risking their lives for the greater good.
